First-position notes
On a violin, first position means your hand stays near the nut. Your four fingers cover about four half-steps per string.
- Open (0) — no finger pressed, the string vibrates freely
- 1st finger — index finger, one whole step up (usually)
- 2nd finger — middle finger, a half or whole step higher
- 3rd finger — ring finger
- 4th finger — pinky
