First-position notes

On a violin, first position means your hand stays near the nut. Your four fingers cover about four half-steps per string.

  • Open (0) — no finger pressed, the string vibrates freely
  • 1st finger — index finger, one whole step up (usually)
  • 2nd finger — middle finger, a half or whole step higher
  • 3rd finger — ring finger
  • 4th finger — pinky
